Western Countries Throw Out Half Of Their Food Simply Because It Doesn’t Look Good...

Did you know that western countries throw out nearly half of their food, not because it’s inedible – but because it doesn’t look appealing. Author & Activist Tristram Stuart delves into the shocking data of wasted food, calling for a more responsible use of global resources.

This is an injustice Tristram Stuart has dedicated his career to fixing. In his newest book, Waste: Uncovering the Global Food Scandal, Tristram shows how changing the systems that result in food waste could be one of the simplest ways to reduce pressure on the environment.

The winner of the international environmental award The Sophie Prize in 2011, Tristram is the founder of Feeding the 5000, a consciousness raising campaign where 5000 members of the public are given a free lunch using only ingredients that otherwise would have been wasted. Held in Trafalgar Square in 2009 and 2011, the event has also been held internationally. In addition, Tristram works with a range of NGOs, governments, and private enterprises to tackle the global food waste scandal. You can check out his talk The Global Food Waste Scandal below…

This is conditioning from large corporations, not people’s preferences.

I know people who throw it out on the “Best Buy Date”. Canned goods can last longer than that.

I’ve heard this so many times. It’s just plain sad. Those dates on food doesn’t help one bit. You and I probably wouldn’t be alive, if our motheres had heard the crap put out today.

Remember when there weren’t any dates on the food. We put it in the cabinet and we ate it. Nobody worried about the dates on the packages.

If it looks good and smells good? Eat it! So the apple or peach has a fleck on it? It’s no good? Cut that little bit off! My ex wife had a three day rule for cooked left overs. Good or bad throw it out if three days have past! We would have so many fights! If my head doesn’t go back from the smell! I’ll eat it! She was a good cook but dumb as a stump!
People starving or malnourished and we North Americans tossing food!! Shame on us!!
