As Manoj Bhargava, the founder of the Free Electric hybrid bike, shares in the video below, it is possible to generate electricity at home while simply doing a daily workout routine.

When an individual pedals the bike, the action drives a flywheel, which turns a generator and charges a battery. This means from just one hour of pedaling, a rural household can be supplied with energy for 24 hours.

The billionaire and his team developed the bicycle to take advantage of mechanical energy created by humans to solve one of the world’s most pervasive problems.

“Everything requires energy. Energy is the great equaliser,” says Bhargava, adding that over half of the world’s population has no access to electricity or access to electricity for two or three hours per day…

Having access to clean, free energy will enable poverty-stricken communities to not only light their homes but to connect to the internet and get educated. Bhargava says the reason the majority of those who are poor stay poor is because they have no power. He aims to fix this with the free energy bicycle.

One bicycle could potentially provide a small village with electricity if each household spends an hour per day pedaling the bike.

In developed nations, the bike could also be utilized to cut energy costs and remedy the obesity crisis. The bicycle is also a clean way to generate power. As Bhargava says himself, if half of the world uses a Free Electric bike, half of the world would be using eco-friendly energy.

Manoj’s plan is to distribute 10,000 of the bicycles in India next year. In addition, he has pledged 90% of his wealth to charity and research. (Via TrueActivist)

It really can’t . Tried it. While pedal power is fine for direct mechanical power transmission, (my blender bike works great) it is terrible for generating electricity.

    Is a typical US household considered small? This is for people without power if you watch the video not the typical US home. I have seen a bike power up a battery in NY and it ran a TV and fridge for a little while.

    I agree, the headline is misleading. Will power an efficient light bulb and charge your phone just fine. But why not go solar? Cheaper and way more efficient. Lots of sunlight in India too

OK I knew it was crap because a peak fitness competition cyclist can generate about 200 watts. That’s enough to power a pc for under two hours, an efficient light globe 10 hours, or, your stove for as little as 2-3 minutes.

Are you sure? A normal person can generate about 100W of power for 1 hour. That’s 0.1kW/hrs. That’s two 5W LED lamps for 10 hours or a TV or laptop for far less time. I wish my house was that efficient ????

    From an artickle on a cycling website which discusses the output of trained cyclists. They can achieve 400W for an hour but most ordinary people are much less than that. When I was at school my physics class did an experiment to determine energy output over a short period of about 5 minutes and from what I can remember we achieved an average of 700W. Of course I was much fitter then ????

No it can’t. The average house uses around 3.6MWe a year (based on figures I’ve seen from Strathclyde University, which put the consumption range between 2.9 and 4.6 MWe). Let’s call it 3.65 to make this calculation easier.

3.65MW / 365 days? Equates to 10KW per day. Given that Bradley Wiggins et al can put out about 500W/hr at peak? You’re around 95% short of your goal after an hour, even if you are an Olympic athlete. Most of us would be 99% short of it. In other words? If we pedalled continuously for over four days? We’d have the power needed for one day. We’d also be crippled in the process.

    Given that these are to be used in places like India in homes that currently have little to no power, the actual power needed would be much lower than in a modern home.

    The average Indian home uses 131kWh/year per person, or ~360Wh per day the poorer home could manage on the 100Wh as described below.

I saw this video about a year ago and would love to see an update on deployment in the real world. The man is targeting rural areas that do not have electric at all or only for a few hours a day – not an average home in the US, for sure. Still, I’d love to be able to power a battery backup by exercising. And it would be great as a backup for winter power outages, at least to keep the cell phone charged and the thermostat and the furnace running.

Calling this an “invention”? There is no new technology. A high school kid can rig one up in an afternoon. It looks too bulky and expensive for a poor villager. Better use an old bike with a cast concrete flywheel. By the way, the lead acid battery will last only 1-2 years used on a daily basis. The whole village will be left with a lot of dead batteries. For us in the developed world, even at 35 cents per kilowatthour, you are generating maybe 3 pennies a day. It will not come close to paying for battery replacement. Exercise? Yes. But forget about generating power.

No it can’t. You are suggesting that you could produce 10kw/hr of electricity in an hour*? That’s more than twenty times the peak output of a Tour de France level cyclist pushing like mad for the ‘King of the Mountains’ shirt.

    The context here is from developing parts of the world that don’t even have power lines. So yes, what you make is what you have. Of course one has to decide if burning the calories is justified by whatever one is using the power for. In most cases, it isn’t.

    In a 1:1 turn ratio, yes its infeasible. However you can easily multiply the power output using a gear drive. Many homesteaders who produce their own power usually have a 1:100 gear drive set up.

    Makes no difference what your gear ratio is. You’re still limited by the amount of energy you can personally put into the system. See the article I link above – those pros are using some extremely high ratios.

My husband, a teacher, made one for his classroom to run the computer, data projector, sound system etc. Combined with a small solar panel for lighting, his classroom is energy self sufficient. The students enjoy generating electricity and measuring their output.

    Thomas Cook My husband will get details for you – he bought the actual motor/turbine, transformer, regulator from the US then added a stationary bike stand and an old bicycle we had hanging around. The whole set up lives on one side of his classroom.

A reasonably fit person could produce around 300Wh maximum in an hour. Most houses use well in excess of 4000Wh in a day and many use over 15000Wh per day.

The numbers just don’t add up.
Once again, ecosnippets shows its complete lack of science knowledge and it’s inability filter or vet any of its content.

    Your forgetting gear drive setups, and step up transformers. This is easily doable with the correct math and right materials. Hell if you drive a car you are using this very technology on a daily basis.

    A fit person can output somewhere between 50 and 150 watts for an hour of vigorous exercise. A very fit person might manage 300W for an hour. That’s 300Wh of energy

    A fit labourer can average about 75W over an eight hour period.
    That’s 600Wh of energy.

    No amount of gears, transformers can increase that amount of energy.

    And just to put things in perspective ith the car example.
    A Litre of Diesel or Petrol contains about 34MJ-36MJ of energy. That’s equivalent to 10,000Wh.

That energy is effectively coming from your food, which fuels you, to power the bike. Conversion of food to usable energy is many times less efficient than any other means of electricity generation.

The thing that anoys me, is “ok, now show me the plans so i can make one at home”.. and yet again, no plans, just a single “concept prototype”. Its not showing the basic process, where there are batteries , how heavy is that fly wheel powering the generator, what power that generator is pumpoing out, whats the battery holding, whats the life on the set up (before you have to buy new batteries),etc, etc. Plenty of smart people out there, who could with the basics figure out a version for themselves and ride that hour a day (i ride all the time). but then again it also reminds me of that Black mirror episode.

healthy human can produce about 1.2 hp briefly and sustain about 0.1 hp indefinitely; trained athletes can manage up to about 2.5 hp briefly and 0.3 hp for a period of several hours. 1 hp is about 750 watts. Time for a little math.

I’ve been seeing this bike online for years now and it still isn’t close to being released. I live off grid, and I have enough physically demanding chores to be doing without sitting on this contraption and pedalling for an hour to power my lights, I’d rather let the sun do all the work thanks.

A small solar panel system can be purchased at habor freight for approximately $200. One day of sun operates lights (led) in your home. If you don’t have a harbor freight in town. You can find them on line.
