Science Now Shows That Plants Appear To Be Sentient Beings...

“Science now shows that plants appear to be sentient beings. They perceive light, smell, touch, water, and many more variables than we do. They can learn, remember and communicate.” – Kenny Ausubel, Bioneers Co-Founder and CEO.

Since 1990, Bioneers has acted as a fertile hub of social and scientific innovators with practical and visionary solutions for the world’s most pressing environmental and social challenges. This speech by Kenny Ausubel was given at the 2016 National Bioneers Conference & talks about the factors that make plants sentient beings. Here is the short version…

First off he’s wrong personhood? No way. Second, off he mixes the definitions used relatively of definition and word usage of sentient. We know plants can feel things and even grow according to their surroundings sure but sentient in the western world definition? No, that would require far more from plants like using tools and showing multiple brain functions and emotions. Westerns require far more thinking and complexity, you can’t just beat us at one task.

He even mentions animals can do singular tasks better than humans but doesn’t realize still they aren’t considered for personhood or “Sentient” in the western world. They aren’t trying to communicate with us or vice versa. Animals will do that even though Gorillas even if they learn our language don’t have the mental development to realize we possess knowledge they do not and ask us questions.

I’ve known this forever!

So much for going vegan

What the hell am I meant to eat now !!

    “Republicans, they’re what’s for dinner.”

Nikki Trusca Hmmm…I always thought that was what you flushed down the toilet after dinner was processed.

just thank the plant gods and u will be fine

The vegans will starve…

Reply

I sopose fruits and cut and come again greens and veggies. Along with nuts. If you think about it that doesn’t kill the plant.

Reply

That is like cutting the back leg off a lamb because you can’t eat all in one go?

    Reply

Dave Leslie no I would say it’s more like eating an egg. It’s not going to kill the hen.

    Reply

But you are killing a new plant.

    Reply

John Baker not killing a new plant more like pruning an existing plant.

Tress are the best example of this

BS! Trying to get us conditioned so we will eat their tube foods that are garbage.

Reply

If you idiots really believe this, I have abridge in Havasu City I will sell you for cheap! This is pure stupidity!

Reply

Since the ancients time plants are considered sentient beings. Ask Plato and Aristotle!

Reply

Where did you ever read that? Do you know the meaning of sentient??? SMH

    Reply

Any living things whether they are plants or animals including humans are sentient meaning they can feel and capable of sensations. Our difference to them is that we are rational beings endowed with higher faculties. That is why we humans mindful of their status need to recognize the value of preserving them which is the least that we can do. Allowing them to perish is utter ignorance of their status as sentient beings. We belong to one web of life. You destroy one you destroy everything.

BS! Show us a brain / central nervous system. Plants react to stimuli. One “scientist” on a magic mushroom trip talking to plants, doesn’t make it science.

Reply

There is a great radio lab podcast that adresses those questions. It is called “tree to shining tree.”

    Reply

Tell you what, go to a slaughterhouse and watch animals being killed and then go to garden and harvest some plants…. then tell me that a plant is the same as a thinking, feeling Sentient being. This is BS being spread by industrial animal agriculture. Absolute rubbish.

    Reply

Ahhh a vegan I take It by the lashing out. Ive been in factory farms, you people have a good point about that. That isnt to say that plants cannot feel just because we are only beginning to undrstand how. Morality aside it is very interesting science that you should check out. You aren’t qualified to call it rubish if you have no idea what science is behind these claims.

    Reply

Not going to type out an explanation, when it’s available in a video….. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bRfX4X0V54A&t=4s

    Reply

I tried watching that video but the guy is an idealogue making a moral argument for veganism. That isn’t what I’m talking about. Plants have been proven to communicate with one another. Many scientific experiments involving radioactive isotope gas exposed to roots, than using a gigar counter on nearby plants. One thing they communicate is external threats like insects and drought. They react to this external stimuli by changing their taste profile and sharing resources. Plants do have a type of adaptive intelligence. Certain plants, like birch trees, cannot exist on their own. Some types of plants give all their created resources to their neighbors when they are dying.

Most of this science comes from the timber industry. They want healthy forests, so they spend money studying plants. I’m not saying don’t be a vegan, I’m just saying this is fascinating new information that you should read.

    Reply

Or rather, you didn’t watch the whole video, because it debunks the cognitive bias you want to believe. If you’d watched the whole video, he clearly points out the science. If you don’t like science, that’s on you.

    Reply

Communicating due to millions of years of evolution leading to stimuli reaction is much, much different than being a thinking, feeling Sentient being.

    Reply

I did watch it. The only science he brings up is the study on catipillars chewing leaves at the end. There is much more than just that out there. I really don’t think he debunked anything. To say that they arent beings because they don’t have a nervous system isn’t valid to me in light of the evidence that points to the opposite. I don’t agree with factory farming either for the record.

    Reply

Nobody said they aren’t “beings”. There is not one single scientific study that indicates Sentience in any plant. Complex stimuli reactions? Yes. Sentient intelligence? No.

    Reply

The people who claim that plants are Sentient beings, almost always use it to make themselves feel better about exploiting and killing animals, including bunk scientists like the one in the article.

    Reply

It’s so much deeper than that I believe anyway. There are plants, like the fly trap, that are carnivores. I guess it comes down to what you define as a sentient being. Im looking forward to the test tube meat products hitting the shelves.

    Reply

Todd Alex Yes, maybe that is where the conflict comes in, the actual definition of Sentience. Simply reacting to stimuli? Or a thinking, feeling being. There is a difference between the two.

    Reply

Well, surprise, surprise.

So many TROLLS we nothing better to do .

I’d rather plants and animals than most people, I talk freely to both. I do not like to talk to those people who I believe are trying to take advantage of me which are most people. Alert, I have very little you would want, Plants and animals needs are met with food and water. People are not content with such simple things, They go right for your soul.-

That is why God tells us to guard our hearts.

    Reply

So what you are saying is vegans are killers

Reply

Be careful the vegans will be telling us not to eat our vegies. It might hurt them.?

Reply

Some of us have known this for sometime!!

Reply

This is why vegans are wrong. :-p

Reply

It is still a healthy way of living, they got vegan body builders, and check this lady out https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4gZ4U3V5LEc

    Reply

Totally agree that it’s a healthy way of living and it’s certainly more eco-friendly the environmental impacts of factory farming a catastrophic. I just get a lot of arrogant sentiments like why do you end life to consume food and in my thoughts all plant life is just as valuable as animal life

    Reply

    The respond is frugivore !

    Reply

There is science behind both a vegan diet, and a carnivore diet being extremely healthy, but the key is the source and quanty you consume. Very rarely do these healthy vegans live on the crap vegan alternatives sold in stores, just like healthy omnivores and carnivores eat wild game from untouched forests and prairies, that or they raise the animals themselves and pay very close attention to their overall health and nutrition.
Basic summary, do not eat store bought crap or mass produced garbage.

    Reply

Yeah…sure. Everything is ,,sentient,, now.

Reply

Oh FFS….. click bait stupidity. Unliking this page

Reply

So vegans are killers to ?

Reply

Hahaha hear that vegans? Now what are you going to eat? Time to do the right thing and stop eating alltogether

Reply

Excuse me while I go eat my pebbles and glass shard dinner. Be back in a jiff…

Reply

Bad news for vegans.

What if they pray for it first?:O does it count then?
