Is this an article from ‘The Onion’? All animals are sentient are they? Does that make it illegal to use insect spray or to step on an ant? What about all those poor tardigrades that we swallow whole!
Replyu shouldnt use insect spray or squish bugs. Bee’s are especially intellegent. Insects are considered animals
Replyat least try not to, i catch myself swatting mosquitos and accidentally killing them for sure
ReplyAND OF COURSE,RATS,MICE,WEASELS ,FERRETS RABBITS,POSSUMS,FERAL CATS,RABID DOGS ETC ETC ..NATURES PARADISE.
Replywe already know this, changes nothing..bigger fish to fry…we are destroying this planet…and ALL the life on it
Replyits kind of pointless to fight within the enemies rules.. they made the rules to allow them to win, no mater what rules you make within their rules, they have the counter rule already worked out. this is how pyschopaths think, and how they work the long game.
ReplyI have always believed that all animals deserve my respect and my kindness. There are some that I don’t care for but I’m still kind and respectful. It’s the same with people <3
Replyhave to give thought to all the creatures in the sea every time some missile is tested and comes crashing down in the water? Must be damaging the seabed too…What inspections are carried out by the marine biologists afterwards I wonder?
ReplyGo New Zealand! About time that ALL countries recognised this.Would that stop people from being so cruel to animals? Or at least make them pause before they commit some act of cruelty?
ReplyHoping this gets policed, unlike the crimes against humanity go unpunished, every day
ReplyYep great news but at the same time they continue dropping tons of 1080 (Sodium fluoroacetate) out of helicopters and killing animals, wild or domestic without any discimination!!
ReplySo does this mean NZers will no longer eat meat? By the time a child starts school he/she understands all animals can feel fear and pain. What does this recognition actually say? We won’t beat you, but we will eat you?
ReplySorry,
A) This is simply not true. There has been no law passed in NZ.
B) New Zealand is one of 2 countries in the world that regularly poisons it’s wildlife, native as well as introduced without distinction, with 1080 or Broudificoum!
If this item was true then obviously our government would be guilty of genocide!!!
On May 5, 2015, the New Zealand Parliament unanimously passed the Animal Welfare Amendment Act (No. 2) 2015, which includes an amendment to the long title of the principal legislation, the Animal Welfare Act 1999, in order to specifically recognize animals as sentient
ReplyPlease Stop rodeos they do terrible harm to horses, calves, and bulls.Strapping them around their groin, poke them with electric proders, spur them,
ReplyExciting… not. And this means exactly what for the millions of ‘sentient beings’ who are annually killed, maimed, abused in the name of profitable agribusiness.
ReplyApart from two highly endangered species which are still commercially harvested (Reid and whitebait) and we haven’t even brought a shark finning ban in fully yet !

Of course they fucking feel things. Life energy makes no distinctions in it’s physical forms.
Reply…and yet continues to murder them in their millions via the meat and dairy industry! Bit of a misnomer really!
Replysure they do ,ants have souls to, wouldnt be killing with 1080 if that were true
ReplyAnimal sentience
The National Animal Welfare Advisory Committee (NAWAC) acknowledges the official recognition of animal sentience within the Animal Welfare Act in 2015. Sentience is the ability to perceive or feel things. The understanding that animals are sentient has always been integral to NAWAC’s development of the codes of welfare and the minimum standards contained within them. With sentience now formally recognised within the Act, NAWAC will continue to integrate the concept of animal sentience into future codes and standards as they are developed and reviewed.

ReplySurya Llwynog so it a piece of legislation that acknowledges common sense and holds no real ground within this Country.
Useless waste of paper if you ask me
You cant truly apply it and have animal agriculture as far as I am concerned . Anyone who fully recognises animal sentience would turn vegan
ReplySurya Llwynog thats my whole point not only agriculture also pest control in this country whose aim is to eradicate anything that isn’t native to this country through one of the most Inhumane methods thinkable so if people think NZ is some awesome Country who treat animal welfare as a top priority have been grossly misinformed.
ReplyAll I expect now is at least a humane way of death for animals quick, fast and no suffering.
ReplyYes it will hopefully improve welfare and also has implications for other ways animals are used such as testing . We are still a very long way from ending animal cruelty suffering and exploitation ( as we are human ) . Now its in law though in future that can be used as an argument to stop some current practices and against any cruel new ones .

Does anybody else note the irony of an ad for a Bacon & Butter diet in the middle of this article.
ReplyBull shit. There’s a whole bunch screaming dying in pain right now in our bushes and the New Zealand government just keeps on dropping it ban 1080
Replytell that to the farmers, 1080 poison droppers, the greyhound racing industry etc etc
ReplyAnd sooner than later, maybe SPIRIT BEINGS. SPIRIT BEING = LIFE FORM + INDIVIDUAL PERSONALITY + FREE WILL
ReplyNew Zealand drops huge amounts of 1080 to kill pests such as possums and rats. Unfortunately, this has been going on for 60 years and kills pets, stock, and thousands of native birds. The Department of Conservation’s activities are outside this Act. The animals affected take hours to days to die in agony. There is no antidote. 1080 drops occur in water catchment areas as well.
ReplyAren’t they one of the world’s leading lamb meat producers? How does that tie in with this? More curious than anything else.
ReplyEric Helmes 1080 is dropped in Forrest areas to protect native birds, however it is also dropped in close proximity to farms and walking tracks. There are on average 158 stock deaths each year. There are some areas that have not been treated which show a balance between pests and native birds. There are many people against the drops, but are treated as idiots. Many scientists are also against the drops. NZ is one of the largest users of 1080, a product that is banned in many countries. As far as the Act goes, it is extremely good and goes a huge way to prevent cruelty in all areas other than the 1080 issue.
ReplyIm a kiwi and this is SPAM. GOOGLE 1080….or our bobby calf industry. Like hell do we treat all animals well.
ReplyThis will be regarding the morpork ( as in the pic) and other indigenous species only .? No problem with that .??
ReplyAnd yet New Zealand continues to drop the 1080 poison in the forests which indiscriminately kills all wildlife.
ReplySeeing that native flora and fauna are dying out at an alarming rate in NZ due to hundreds of years of burning, crushing, killing, poisoning and a substantial number of destructive introduced species , I would hope it is not to late. We have enough dairy cows alone to equal 90 million extra people, along with the added pollution and toxic land practice that such intensive dairy involves. Will NZ natural environments survive? I doubt it but remain hopeful.
ReplyThey really need to ban the entertainment Rodeo! It is animal torture.Horses, bulls strapped tight around their groins.Calves been throttled with ropes.Electric prodders, spurs to the animals knecks. It is outdated sadism. The fear in these poor animals eyes .Anti Rodeo
